FI Code Tips
Back to Tips

These tips are being compiled from input from all the miscellaneous GL1800/Goldwing forums.

My dealer finally figured out how to get the code out of the ECM on what I thought was an injection fault. It was a 4-1 code. This confused him even more as the service manual only lists up to 3-3. He called the tech line and they referred him to a service bulletin released last year that he never got. After getting the bulletin faxed to him he found that the "mysterious" (that's how the bulletin describes it) 4-1 code indicates a problem with a sensor that tells the ECM what gear the bike is in, either a faulty sensor or the wires in the left handlebar were pinched to cause this problem. Apparently the bike thinks it's in a lower gear, at WFO (regardless of throttle position) and dumps in fuel accordingly. I wouldn't have believed this if he hadn't let me read the bulletin. Lo and behold, there was nothing wrong with the sensor but the wiring in the left handlebar was pinched.....I haven't checked the mileage yet but it makes sense to me. This is supposed to be a rare problem affecting some 02's so if your mileage stinks this might be something else to investigate. I might have to change my opinion of this particular shop based on this.........
