Side Cover Tips
 Back to Tips

There were several posts about riders loosing the chrome side covers. I thought these might be an exaggeration. However, on my way home from the dealer who had just performed my first oil change, I felt some pressure against my right leg. The right side cover was about to blow off. I pulled to the side of the road and discovered that the rear grommet was missing. Fortunately, it had been pushed through and I found it behind the frame. I called the dealer and told them that they should glue in all of the grommets when doing the initial assembly so as to avoid an irritated customer. I followed this advise from one of the forums:

Left Side

Right Side

I always figured if the covers were a little hard to push on they'd be harder to blow off. I glued my grommets in place and am glad to push a little harder to put them back on. By spraying the wax, or any other lube, on the grommets to pop the side covers off easier, it seems you are just asking the wind to pop them off for you."

I did not spray in wax or lubricant on the inside of the grommets. I glued all six grommets. R2 is the grommet that had pushed through and almost cost me to loose my cover. Grommets L1 and R1 both pulled off when I removed the cover. Grommet L2 was in good and tight, but I glued it anyway.

The manual says to use soapy water when reinstalling. This will provide some lubricant during install, but will dry sticking to help hold the cover in place.

The manual also has a warning about the potential of grommet loss. Not a very good design in my opinion.

I haven't done this but some people on the forum drilled small holes in the grommets and wire tied them to the frame so that if a grommet got pushed through, it would not be lost.

Others have tie wrapped the side covers to the frame: "After having my side cover come loose from the bike twice, and reading about others losing theirs, I decided to secure mine to my bike, took about 15 minutes to secure all 4 side covers. Underneath each male end there is a tiny hole already there, slip a small 4 inch wire tie thru this hole, then slip a 10 inch wire tie thru the 4 inch tie and secure tie to the bike. Total cost under a buck. tools needed , 1 pair side cutters. I left myself enough slack to check the oil, that is the reason for the 10 inch tie."
